Botswana offers an unparalleled wilderness experience for the discerning traveller. An opportunity for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and those who want to find peace and tranquillity away from the mayhem of city life, this is a place where your soul can be restored.

Popular fly-in safaris between camps are quick and easy, maximising time on safari; however, mobile safaris remain an enjoyable and popular way to travel and enjoy the abundance of animals and varied birdlife.

A unique experience is the Okavango Delta, one of the largest inland, changing deltas in the world; the Makgadikgadi Pans, the world’s largest salt pans. When it rains, the pan can change into an immense blue lake, an important habitat for meerkats, wildebeest and the zebra migration. 40% of the land in Botswana is covered by National Parks and Wildlife Reserves, such as Moremi and Chobe.

Namibia is a vast land of contrast, cities with colonial-type German architecture, wild, rugged mountain ranges and endless flat plains, formidable deserts and lush tropical swamps. A land of inspiring landscapes carved from primaeval rock formations by fierce climatic extremes.

The first country to incorporate “environmental protection” into its constitution. Named after the oldest desert in the world, the Namib Desert, Namibia offers a safari destination to be remembered. The sand dunes of Sossusvlei, in the Namib Desert are some of the highest dunes in the world.

Despite its harsh and often unforgiving environments, Namibia supports a remarkable array of wildlife uniquely adapted to survive in these extreme conditions.

Etosha National Park is one of Africa’s finest parks, both in size and diversity of wildlife.

The Skeleton Coast is so named due to over 1,000 ships that were wrecked along this treacherous coastline, where dense, blinding fog, powerful Atlantic currents, and shifting sandbanks have historically made navigation extremely hazardous.

Mozambique is a lush paradise situated on the eastern coast of Southern Africa. Beautiful white sandy beaches, lively music and delicious seafood. It was a Portuguese colony from 1891 –1975. The capital, Maputo was called Lourenço Marques before independence. It is a cosmopolitan city, an eclectic mix of cultures, offering a fusion of African, Portuguese, and Arabic influences with Portuguese being the official language.

In the Quirimbas Archipelago – a 250 kilometres stretch of coral reefs and 32 idyllic islands – the waters are inhabited by dolphins, turtles, whales and dugongs (sea cows).

The Bazaruto Archipelago farther south has reefs which protect rare marine life. For the adrenaline seekers, adventure sports abound: Sailing, windsurfing, paragliding, kite surfing, deep sea fishing and swimming with the dolphins. Well known for deep sea diving and snorkelling with rich coral reefs and over 1,200 species of fish. At the end of the Great Rift Valley, Gorongosa National Park offers a rugged wilderness experience.

Unlike many tropical destinations, Mozambique remains uncrowded, offering a sense of exclusivity and tranquillity.

Zambia is landlocked and borders on the countries of Botswana, Zimbabwe, DRC, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Angola. The Zambians are warm, friendly people and with the many tribes and traditions, it offers a multifaceted cultural experience.

From floodplains to dense woodlands, it is a diverse country; one of Africa’s most unspoiled safari destinations, offering a raw, authentic wildlife experience.

The land of the legendary African walking safari, South Luangwa National Park pioneered the walking safari, allowing for close wildlife encounters. It is one of the most water-rich countries in Africa, with five vast lakes, three major rivers, at least 17 waterfalls and various wetland areas including the famed Victoria Falls, on the border with Zimbabwe. One of the natural wonders of the world!

The Lower Zambezi River provides thrilling water-based safaris, close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and elephants.

Kafue is one of the largest reserves in the whole of Africa. Despite its size and prominent location, it remains little-known and largely unexplored with vast tracts of its virgin bush still untouched.

Zimbabwe derives its name from Great Zimbabwe, meaning “great houses of stone”. Great Zimbabwe, built in medieval times by people of the Shona tribe, is situated in the south of the country and is one of the most important archaeological sites in sub-Saharan Africa. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Probably the best-known attraction is the Victoria Falls, called Mosi a Tunya, “the smoke that thunders”, by the locals. It is one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders. Besides the breathtaking vistas and sundowner cruises, there are adrenaline-fueled activities like bungee jumping and white-water rafting.

National Parks – Hwange, Mana Pools, and Gonarezhou teem with diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. Hwange is home to the Big 5 and the largest and oldest reserve in the country.  In Mana Pools, witness the unexpected wonder of elephants standing on their hind legs. Zimbabwean guides are renowned as some of the best-trained and most knowledgeable in Africa.

Lake Kariba is the world’s largest man-made lake and reservoir by volume. It lies 1,300 kilometres upstream from the Indian Ocean, along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was created in 1959 and has incredible bird and animal life, popular for houseboat holidays.

My love for travel began as a child when our family travelled to Europe. I loved the history and antiquities and so a spark was ignited. Subsequently, I have visited about 77 countries and have spent many years in various tourism and travel sectors. I never tire of travelling to new and different places and back to many of my old favourites. My jobs at Sabi Sabi and Chobe Game Lodge paved the way for my passion of the bush and at every opportunity I go and enjoy the peace, sounds and fusion of earthy scents found in the African wild.
